“When I open the zip bags containing the bodies of migrants, I get scared, how many times have I cried and vomited. In the ship wrecked in October 2013, alone 300 meters from the coast, where they died 368 people, I remember so many children dressed up for a party, no one was saved. But after the news of that tragedy, that went around the world, no one is indignant anymore”. These are the doctor's words Peter Bartolo, that in 28 years it has rescued 350,000 migrants as a doctor at the Lampedusa outpatient clinic, speaking in Arezzo, on the university campus, on the occasion of the Education Festival.
“Nobody talks about what is done to women, consider nothing: all are raped, many arrive pregnant, many others are subjected to hormonal torture because they must not get pregnant but end up immediately exploited in the prostitution market and not go to be carers or babysitters as they were promised – Bartolo said, new European parliamentarian elected with the Pd – Now everything passes in total indifference and what happens on the island nobody knows. Sometimes I feel useless, helpless but I am privileged to have had the good fortune to meet these people”.
Meeting with university and high school students from Arezzo, Bartolo argued that “everyone must know what happens to migrants. This is why I have been going around for three years to tell stories, especially to young people, the truth: I did many interviews but it was not enough, so I convinced Gianfranco Rosi to make a film, ‘Fuocoammare’, defined by critics as a 'punch in the stomach', but that wasn't enough, I wrote a first book where I told the lives of these people like us, but even this was not enough, then I made another film that was even censored and a new book, 'The Stars of Lampedusa', hoping the stories of migrant children, that I told you, they served, but nothing. Because of this, I finally decided to go into politics”…
